Air Race moves to altitude in Monument Valley
10.05.2007 |
|
After dealing with scorching desert heat in Abu Dhabi and dazzling a crowd of a million spectators in Rio de Janeiro, the pilots of the Red Bull Air Race World Series will now contend with challenges of flying at altitude in Monument Valley, Utah -- 5,200 feet above sea level -- for the season's third race.
Red Bull Air Race championship leader Paul Bonhomme of Britain, who jumped into first place with his victory in Rio three weeks ago, will lead a pack of hungry rivals through the dry air of the picturesque Navajo Tribal Park in Monument Valley. The 13 Air Race pilots took their "reconnaissance flights" of the course on Wednesday, getting to know the challenging circuit two days before Friday's qualifying session. Mike Mangold (USA/Team Cobra), Kirby Chambliss (USA/Team Red Bull) and Nigel Lamb (GBR/Team Breitling) are pictured here.
The Monument Valley race marks the first time in this Red Bull Air Race World Series season that the pilots will be flying over land rather than water. The race is set for Saturday after Friday's qualifying session in which the 13 pilots will be battling it out to get one of the 12 spots in Saturday's elimination rounds. The pilots will be navigating just a few dozen feet above the ground an aerial race track featuring air-filled pylons at speeds of up to 250 mph. Last year, there were more than six million spectators at eight races.
